My Village...Marathovouno

By Mike Hajimike

Since 1974, 38% of Cyprus has been occupied by Turkey. As one of the MANY victims of this act of modern day colonialism I feel gutted by the continued occupation of my homeland. The last time I visited MARATHOVOUNO was 1968. I can recall a few faces, names and key places. I often wonder what it looks like today, how big the jasmine tree is in the garden, or who is living there illegally. As a result of the occupation regime's obstinacy and ignorance I am not allowed to walk freely in the place of my birth. Like most Cypriots I live in hope and one fine day we will be sitting under the jasmine tree in our family home, singing songs and exchanging stories with relatives and neighbours.
