        | Consumer Price Index for the
        Month of December, 1998 | 
       
     
     The Department of Statistics and Research
    announces that the Consumer Price Index for December, 1998 decreased by 0,50 units or 0,40
    per cent to 123,84 units compared to 124,34 in the previous month. This is mainly due to
    decreases in the prices of potatoes, certain fresh fruit, vegetables and pork.
    2. The average rate of increase of the Index for the whole year 1998
    (January-December 1998) compared to 1997 was 2,23% while the Index of December 1998
    compared to the Index of December 1997 showed an increase of 0,95%. 
    3. The six-monthly average rate of increase of the Index during the period
    July-December 1998 was 1,99% and reached 124,08 units compared to 121,66 in the preceding
    six months. The cost of living allowance increases as from 1st January, 1999 and for the
    next six months to 203,16% on basic salaries compared to 197,24% in the preceding six
    months with the respective minimum of such allowance.  |
