Consumer Price Index for the Month of September, 1999

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that the Consumer Price Index for September, 1999 increased by 2,45 units or 1,97 per cent to 126,72 units compared to 124,27 in the previous month. This is mainly due to increases in the prices of clothing and footwear following the end of the summer season sales as well as to increases in the prices of certain fresh fruit and vegetables, potatoes, electricity and tuition fees of private educational institutions and part-time educational coaching centres.

2. The average rate of increase of the Index for the period January-September 1999 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 1,33%.

3. The average rate of increase of the Index for the last twelve months (i.e. October 1998-September 1999) compared to the preceding twelve months (i.e. October 1997-September 1998) was 1,35%.
