The main developments in Cyprus Foreign Trade during January 2000 as
compared with January 1999 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £142,3 mn as compared with £125,5
mn in January 1999. Total exports reached £41,3 mn compared to £32,5 mn
in January 1999. The trade deficit accounted for £101,0 mn compared to £93,0
mn in January 1999.
(b) Imports for home consumption were £112,8 mn in January 2000 and £106,6
mn in January 1999. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption
valued at £44,3 mn or 39,3% followed by consumer goods with £27,4 mn or
24,3%, capital goods with £14,5 mn or 12,9% and transport equipment with
£11,9 mn or 10,5%.
(c) Domestic exports including shipstores, valued at £15,1 mn as
compared with £13,0 mn in January 1999, whilst re-exports were £26,2mn
compared to £19,5 mn in January 1999. Industrial products of domestic
produce exported during January 2000 accounted for £12,4 mn or 84,3%.
Exports of raw agricultural products in January 2000 valued at £2,2 mn.
(d) The EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £72,7 mn or
51,1% during January 2000. During the same month the EU countries absorbed
£7,1 mn or 48,7% of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores,
followed by the Arab countries with 26,5% or £3,9 mn.
