The main developments in Cyprus Foreign Trade during the period
January-August 2002 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) were £1.641,3 mn as compared with £1.729,9
mn in January-August 2001. Total exports amounted to £354,8 mn compared to
£431,8 mn during the period January-August 2001. The trade deficit
accounted for £1.286,5 mn compared to £1.298,2 mn in the corresponding
period of 2001.
(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £1.492,5 mn compared to
£1.477,7 mn in January-August 2001. Intermediate inputs imported for home
consumption in January-August 2002 valued at £479,2 mn or 32,1%, followed
by consumer goods with £425,3 mn or 28,5%, transport equipment with £204,2
mn or 13,7%, capital goods with £163,1 mn or 10,9% and fuels and
lubricants with £159,2 mn or 10,7%.
(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £169,7
mn as compared with £174,9 mn in January-August 2001 and re-exports,
including stores and provisions to £185,1 mn compared to £256,9 mn in the
corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce
exported in January-August 2002 accounted for £122,3 mn or 74,8%, while
exports of raw agricultural products valued at £39,2 mn or 24,0%.
(d) During the period January-August 2002 the EU countries supplied
Cyprus with goods valued at £877,5 mn or 53,5% and absorbed goods
amounting to £92,2 mn or 56,4% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding
stores and provisions.
