Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January-February 2002

The main developments in Cyprus Foreign Trade during the period January-February 2002 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £377,0 mn as compared with £336,8 mn in the first two months of 2001. Total exports amounted to £79,4 mn compared to £88,6 mn during the period January-February 2001. The trade deficit accounted for £297,6 mn compared to £248,2 mn in the corresponding period of 2001.

(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £341,7 mn compared to £284,6 mn in January-February 2001. During the first two months of 2002, intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £116,4 mn or 34,1%, followed by consumer goods with £86,4 mn or 25,3%, fuels and lubricants with £46,0 mn or 13,5%, transport equipment with £39,0 mn or 11,4% and capital goods with £36,5 mn or 10,7%.

(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £36,6 mn as compared with £32,4 mn in January-February 2001 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £42,8 mn compared to £56,1 mn in the corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January-February 2002 accounted for £28,7 mn or 80,4% while exports of raw agriculture products valued at £6,5 mn.

(d) During the period January-February 2002 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £180,2 mn or 47,8% and absorbed goods valued at £17,4 mn or 48,7% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
