Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January - July 2000

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-July 2000 as compared with January-July 1999, were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £1.320,9 mn as compared with £1.108,1 mn in January-July 1999. Total exports reached £355,9 mn compared to £305,7 mn in January-July 1999. The trade deficit accounted for £965,0 mn compared to £802,3 mn.

(b) Imports for home consumption were £1.075,5 mn during January-July, 2000 and £915,1 mn in January-July 1999. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £388,6 mn or 36,1% followed by consumer goods with £315,7 mn or 29,4%, capital goods with £131,9 mn or 12,3% and transport equipment with £109,7 mn or 10,2%.

(c) Domestic exports including shipstores, valued at £145,1 mn as compared with £129,8 mn in January-July 1999, whilst re-exports including shipstores, were £210,9 mn compared to £176,0 mn in January-July 1999. Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-July 2000 accounted for 80,2% or £110,4 mn. Exports of raw agricultural products in January-July 2000 valued at £26,3 mn.

(d) During the first seven months of 2000 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £699,3 mn or 52,9%. During the same period the EU countries absorbed £72,1 mn or 52,4% of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores, followed by the Arab countries with 24,3% or £33,4 mn.
