Foreign Trade Statistics for the
Period January - March 1999 |
The main developments in
Cyprus Foreign Trade during January-March 1999 as compared with January-March 1998 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded
warehouses) totalled £423,3 mn as compared with £465,8 mn in January-March 1998. Total
exports fell to £112,8 mn in relation to £154,8 mn in January-March 1998. The trade
deficit accounted for £310,4 mn compared to £311,0 mn in January-March 1998.
(b) Imports for home consumption were £361,1 mn in January-March 1999 and £381,5 mn
in January-March 1998. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £137,0
mn or 38,0% followed by consumer goods with £104,0 mn or 28,8%, transport equipment with
£48,3 mn or 13,4% and capital goods with £47,4 mn or 13,1%.
(c) Domestic exports fell to £50,7 mn as compared with £57,1 mn in January-March 1998
whilst re-exports were reduced considerably to £62,1 mn compared to £97,6 mn in
January-March 1998. Industrial products of domestic produce exported during the first
quarter of 1999 accounted for £37,7 or 75,9% as compared with £41,6 mn or 74,6% during
the corresponding period of 1998, with clothing accounting for £5,6 mn compared to £6,9
mn in January-March 1998, pharmaceutical products £5,1 mn as against £5,0 mn, cigarettes
£3,3 mn compared to £3,1 mn and footwear £1,3 mn as against £2,6 mn. Exports of raw
agricultural products in January-March 1999 valued at £11,6 mn and £14,0 mn for
January-March 1998, with potatoes accounting for £1,9 mn compared to £4,2 mn and citrus
fruit for £7,7 mn for both periods of January-March 1999 and 1998.
(d) The EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £243,3 mn or 57,5% during
the first quarter of 1999. During the same period last year the EU countries absorbed
54,6% or £27,1 mn of Cyprus domestic exports followed by the Arab countries with 24,4% or
£12,1 mn.
