Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January-May 2002

The main developments in Cyprus Foreign Trade during the period January-May 2002 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totaled £1.061,6 mn as compared with £1.043,9 mn in January-May 2001. Total exports amounted to £229,4 mn compared to £259,7 mn during the period January-May 2001. The trade deficit accounted for £832,2 mn compared to £784,3 mn in the corresponding period of 2001.

(b) Imports for home consumption totaled £952,9 mn compared to £881,9 mn in January-May 2001. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption in January-May 2002 valued at £302,7 mn or 31,8%, followed by consumer goods with £277,6 mn or 29,1%, transport equipment with £124,5 mn or 13,1%, fuels and lubricants with £107,7 mn or 11,3% and capital goods with £101,6 mn or 10,7%.

(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £111,7 mn as compared with £102,4 mn in January-May 2001 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £117,7 mn compared to £157,3 mn in the corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January-May 2002 accounted for £77,3 mn or 71,7% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £29,4 mn or 27,2%.

(d) During the period January-May 2002 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £552,6 mn or 52,1% and absorbed goods amounting to £60,2 mn or 55,8% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
