Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January - September 2000

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-September 2000 as compared with January-September 1999, were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £1.714,2 mn as compared with £1.398,9 mn in January-September 1999. Total exports reached £457,9 mn compared to £408,1 mn in January-September 1999. The trade deficit accounted for £1.256,3 mn compared to £990,8 mn.

(b) Imports for home consumption were £1.398,5 mn during January-September, 2000 and £1.146,2 mn in January-September 1999. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £487,6 mn or 34,9% followed by consumer goods with £408,0 mn or 29,2%, fuels and lubricants with £178,2 mn or 12,8%, capital goods with £171,7 mn or 12,3% and transport equipment with £138,6 mn or 9,9%.

(c) Domestic exports including shipstores, valued at £184,5 mn as compared with £159,8 mn in January-September 1999, whilst re-exports including shipstores, were £273,4 mn compared to £248,4 mn in January-September 1999. Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-September 2000 accounted for 81,4% or £140,0 mn. Exports of raw agricultural products in January-September 2000 valued at £30,8 mn.

(d) During January-September 2000 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £890,4 mn or 51,9%. During the same period the EU countries absorbed £90,4 mn or 52,6% of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores, followed by the Arab countries with 25,0% or £42,9 mn.
