The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period
January-September 2001 as compared with January-September 2000 were:
Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed
into bonded warehouses) totalled £1.913,5 mn as compared with £1.714,1 mn in
January-September 2000. Total exports reached £477,7 mn compared to £458,1
mn in January-September 2000. The trade deficit accounted for £1.435,8 mn
compared to £1.256,0 mn.
Imports for home consumption were £1.640,6 mn during January-September
2001 and £1.398,2 mn in January-September 2000. Intermediate inputs imported
for home consumption valued at £531,2 mn or 32,4% followed by consumer goods
with £458,9 mn or 28,0%, fuels and lubricants with £204,1 mn or 12,4%,
capital goods with £195,7 mn or 11,9% and transport equipment with £175,0 mn
or 10,7%.
Domestic exports including shipstores, valued at £190,3 mn as compared
with £184,2 mn in January-September 2000, whilst re-exports including
shipstores, were £287,4 mn compared to £273,9 mn in January-September 2000.
Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-September
2001 accounted for £139,0 mn or 77,3%. Exports of raw agricultural products
in January-September 2001 valued at £39,3 mn.
During January-September 2001 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods
valued at £952,4 mn or 49,8% and absorbed goods valued £97,4 mn or 54,2% of
Cyprus domestic exports.
