Foreign Trade Statistics for the
Period January-November 1998 |
The Department of Statistics
and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary form for the
period January-November 1998.
The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during January-November 1998 as compared
with January-November 1997 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded
warehouses) valued at £1.738,4 mn as compared with £1.743,5 mn in January-November 1997.
(b) Total exports decreased to £514,2 mn in relation to £593,2 mn in January-November
1997.
(c) As a result of the above developments the trade deficit reached £1.224,1 mn
compared to £1.149,5 mn in January-November 1997.
(d) Imports for home consumption were £1.439,9 mn in January-November 1998 and
£1.363,1 mn in January-November 1997.
(e) The EU countries supplied goods valued at £948,5 mn or 54,6% of the total imports
as compared with £824,5 mn or 47,3% during January-November 1997.
(f) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-November 1998 were
£570,7 mn or 39,6% as against £520,2 mn or 38,2% in January-November 1997, followed by
consumer goods with £409,0 mn or 28,4% as against £335,3 mn or 24,6%; capital goods
increased to £183,1 mn or 12,7% as compared with £148,0 mn or 10,9% in January-November
1997 and transport equipment amounted to £167,8 mn or 11,7% compared to £136,7 mn or
10,0%.
(g) Domestic exports including shipstores, reached £206,4 mn in January-November 1998
in relation to £199,2 mn in January-November 1997, whilst re-exports including shipstores
decreased sharply to £307,9 mn compared to £394,0 mn in January-November 1997.
(h) The EU countries absorbed 52,9% or £105,0 mn of Cyprus domestic exports (excluding
shipstores), followed by the Arab countries with a share of 26,6% or £52,8 mn. The
corresponding shares of the EU countries and the Arab countries for January-November 1997
were 49,5% and 28,5% respectively.
(i) Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-November of 1998
(excluding shipstores) accounted for 80,1% or £159,0 mn as compared with 82,7% or £160,7
mn, during the corresponding period of 1997, with clothing and footwear accounting for
£26,9 mn and £7,8 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-November
1997 totalled £27,7 mn and of footwear £6,8 mn. Exports of agricultural products
increased by 17,9% to £38,2 mn as compared with £32,4 mn in January-November 1997 with
the potatoes accounting for £18,6 mn compared to £8,0 mn and citrus fruit dropped to
£11,6 mn from £15,6 mn in January-November 1997 .
