Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January-October 1997

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary form for the period January-October 1997.

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the above period as compared with the corresponding period of 1996 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) valued at £1.592,1 mn as compared with £1.549,0 mn during January-October 1996.

(b) Total exports were £541,7 mn in relation to £540,0 mn in January-October 1996.

(c) As a result of the above developments the trade deficit amounted to £1.050,4 mn compared to £1.009,0 mn in January-October 1996.

(d) Imports for home consumption were £1.247,1 mn in January-October 1997 and £1.214,5 mn in the same period of 1996.

(e) The E.U. countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £743,1 mn or 46,7% of the total imports as compared with £745,6 mn or 48,1% during January-October 1996.

(f) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-October 1997 were £473,8 mn or 38,0% as against £488,0 mn or 40,2% in January-October 1996, followed by consumer goods with £300,9 mn or 24,1% as against £263,7 mn or 21,7%; capital goods accounted for £134,8 mn or 10,8% as compared with £133,3 mn or 11,0% in January-October 1996 and transport equipment amounted to £125,2 mn or 10,0% compared to £137,3 mn or 11,3%.

(g) Domestic exports including shipstores, fell to £181,4 mn in January-October 1997 from £193,8 mn in January-October 1996 whilst re-exports including shipstores, increased to £360,3 mn compared to £346,1 mn in January-October 1996.

(h) The E.U. countries absorbed £88,1 mn or 50,0% of Cyprus domestic exports (excluding shipstores), followed by the Arab countries with £49,0 mn or 27,8%. The corresponding shares of the E.U. countries and the Arab countries for January-October 1996 were 58,3% and 19,3% respectively.

(i) Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-October 1997 (excluding shipstores) accounted for 82,4% or £145,0 mn as compared with 74,0% or £139,5 mn, during the corresponding period of 1996, with clothing and footwear accounting for £25,3 mn and £6,0 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-October 1996 totalled £32,5 mn and of footwear £4,4 mn. Exports of agricultural products dropped sharply to £30,1 mn in January-October 1997 from £48,2 mn in January-October 1996, with potatoes accounting for £7,2 mn compared to £26,9 mn and citrus fruit for £14,6 mn during both periods of January-October 1996 and 1997.
