                 Statement by the Press Secretary

The President spoke this morning from the Oval Office with Prime
Minister Tansu Ciller of Turkey. The two leaders discussed recent
developments in Bosnia, Cyprus and a range of bilateral issues. The
conversation lasted about fifteen minutes.

On Bosnia, the leaders expressed their common hope that the
parties on the ground would abide by the NATO deadline for the removal
of heavy weapons from the exclusion zone around Sarajevo and that
progress could be achieved in negotiations to achieve a permanent peace
solution. The President welcomed recent Turkish efforts to support the
peace process, including Prime Minister Ciller's recent visit to
Sarajevo.

The leaders also discussed Cyprus. They welcomed the recently
negotiated agreement in principle for confidence- building measures
among the parties in Cyprus, and expressed the hope that this agreement
will soon result in progress on the ground.
