Takis
Klerides was born in Nicosia in 1951. He
completed his secondary education at the
Pancyprian Economic Lyceum and in 1970
went to the United Kingdom where he
studied Business Administration and
Accountancy. He is a member of the
Chartered Association of Certified
Accountants of the United Kingdom.
He
completed his higher education in 1974
and after working in the U.K. and Greece
for three years, returned in 1977 to
Cyprus, where he worked as a Chartered
Certified Accountant and Business
Consultant.
Prior to
his appointment as Minister of Finance he
was:
- A
senior partner in the Accountancy and
Counsulting firm KPMG/Metaxas Loizides
Syrimis.
- A
member of the Institute of Certified
Public Accountants of Cyprus, serving
on the Institute's Board from 1991
until 1999. He was also Honorary
Secretary of the Institute.
- A
member of the Commission for the
Protection of Competition from 1998
until 1999.
- A
member of the Board of the Cyprus
Olympic Committee.
- President of the Cyprus
Basketball Federation for ten years,
from 1988 until 1998.
He was
appointed Minister of Finance on 19 March
1999.
He is
married to Nancy and has a son and a
daughter.
