Michalis Papapetrou was
born in Nicosia on 11/4/1947.
After completing
Kykko Gymnasium secondary school he studied Law
at the University of Athens. He then did
post-graduate studies at University College,
London.
From 1972 until
his appointment as Government Spokesman in
August 1999, he was a practicing
lawyer.
As a student he
was President of the Union of Cypriot Students
in London, member of the Board of the student
organisation OEFEK, General Secretary of OMONIA
Sports Club, President of EDON, the youth
organisation of the political party AKEL, and
member of the Board of the Cyprus Bar
Council.
In the
parliamentary elections of 1985 he was elected
AKEL deputy and in 1990 he was a founder of the
Democratic Socialist Reform Movement (ADISOK)
of which he was Vice-President and then
President. He also served as an ADISOK deputy
in the House of Representatives.
In December 1996,
when ADISOK merged with the Movement of Free
Democrats to form the United Democrats (EDI),
he was elected Deputy President of the new
party. He participates in this capacity in the
National Council.
He was appointed
Government Spokesman on 25 August
1999.
He is married
and has a daughter and a son.
