accusative case
by Guest User - Tuesday, 15 January 2008, 01:23 AM
In lesson 20 that deals with the accusative case these both forms appear:
Διαβαζω εφημεριδα.
Διαβαζω την εφημεριδα.
So, are both correct?
Can anyone help me with this?

Tes, they're both correct. They just vary by the use of the definite article:
Διαβαζω εφημεριδα. = I read a newspaper (i.e., not any specific newspaper).
Διαβαζω την εφημεριδα. = I read the newspaper (i.e., the specific newspaper in question).

  Thank you Greg.
But if this is the case, shouldn't it be
Διαβαζω μια εφημεριδα
in case of not any specific newspaper?

  No,
Διαβάζω μια εφημερίδα. = I read one newspaper (as opposed to a different number of newspapers).
-while-
Διαβάζω εφημερίδα. = I read a newspaper (in general, not any specific name or number).

Take a look at "ένα" in Discussion Forum 8 where this issue is discussed further.
