Linux - Mplayer - Audio lessons
by Guest User - Thursday, 25 December 2008, 10:28 AM
I had some problems to play the audio lessons with Mplayer under Linux, but i solved it.

If you notice, lesson 1 of Gr101 for example, the link to the audio lesson points to:
http://real.kypros.org:8080/ramgen/GGGLLL/Greeklesson1.rm

but this is not the address you should play in Mplayer, the real address is:
rtsp://real.kypros.org:554//GGGLLL/Greeklesson1.rm

Once you have input the previous address, you should wait about a minute to hear something, so don't be scared.

I have tried the same method for lesson 2 and 3 of Gr101, and they also work.

Hello all,

I had a problem obtaining the Audio lessons as I run Fedora Linux on my computer. It is not easy to get some of the native audio players to work with the old RealMedia codecs.

I sent an email to Giorgos Zacharia who promptly replied with a link:
Try downloading the real alternative player:
www.free-codecs.com/download/real_Alternative.htm

This is a MS Windows application and not really suited for Linux.
As I was unable to locate a suitable player for Linux I installed WINE, the free WINdows Emulator.
The Real Alternative Player is Media Player Classic and installed with no problems.

To play the lessons, I found it is easier to right click on the "Listen to Audio Lesson" link and select copy link location.

open the Real Alternative Player / Media Player Classic
Click on File and Open File
In the dialog, Right click in the open box and Paste
Click OK and enjoy your lesson.

If you do not hear the audio but the player is running, you might want to check your mixer settings.

I will be happy to try and help with any problems with these steps.

Happy Listening
