I believe that I have seen "The Acropolis of Athens" written both as: H Ακρόπολη των Αθηνών but also as H Ακρόπολη της Αθήνας Doesn't the first mean that the word "Athens" is plural whilst the second that it is singular? Can it be either? Thanks in advance for any comments on this. |

The first version uses the ancient/classical/katharevousa name for Athens, αι Αθήναι (gen. των Αθηνών); the second uses the modern name for Athens, η Αθήνα (gen. της Αθήνας). See "FYI: η Αθήνα" in Discussion Forum 26 for a little more about this topic. Regards, Greg Brush |
