  The archaic letters digamma (or wau), san, qoppa (or koppa), and sampi were dropped from the early Greek alphabet more than 2500 years ago, because they either represented sounds that did not exist any more in spoken Greek or were unnecessary redundant variations of other letters. Digamma, qoppa, and sampi continued to be used in writing, but only as Greek numerals, not as symbols for spoken sounds.
