adjective or adverb?
by Guest User - Saturday, 28 June 2008, 02:29 AM

Hi, I have another grammar question I can't find a better place to post. It's about λίγο and πολύ plus the adjective forms of these. If I'm saying "I speak a little bit of Greek" then what's this difference between:

Μιλάω λίγο ελληνικά and
Μιλάω λίγα ελληνικά

Do both have a similar meaning. If I make the comparitive do I then need the adjective form? Is it the same for πολύ?

Μιλάω πολύ ελληνικά
Μιλάω πολλά ελληνικά

Ευχαριστώ πολύ!

  adjective if it refers to the object (...λίγα ελληνικά)

adverb if it refers to the verb (μιλάω λίγο...)

same theory applies to
(adverb) πολύ
and
(adjective) πολλοί or πολλή or πολλά (depends on the object in question)
but in this case it's easier to spot the difference due to it's λ spelling
adverb = λ + υ
adjective = λλ + noun-ending (ος/η/ο - οι/ες/α etc)

  Adjective qualifies a noun or pronoun. An adjective often, but not always, comes before the noun or the pronoun which it modifies. For example: 1. The sweet baby was sleeping. 2. The baby was sweet. The word "sweet" is describing and modifies the noun baby.
An adverb is a word that describes a verb.
