Advice to the uninitiated foreign visitor. If you are offered by the lady of the house bitter orange, cherry, apricot, walnut, almond, date or any other home-made jam preserves, you must stand up, pick up the glass of water, pick up one or a spoonful of what you are offered, say 'efcharisto poli' (thank you very much), bring the jam over the glass close to your mouth, sit down, say 'stin eghia sas' (to your health), eat the jam, lick the spoon/fork so that you avoid spilling any syrup, drink some water, put the spoon/fork in the glass, wait for the lady to come to collect the glass, stand up and wish her 'Yia sta heria sas' (may your hands be healthy). Sit down. It will then be accepted that you know the etiquette and are of good manners. |
