The Yeni Djami was built by Mentesh Hadji Ismail Aga , Turkish Governor of Cyprus in 1772 , on the site of a Latin church . Lore has it that the governor dreamt of a treasure buried beneath the walls of the old church , which was being used as a mosque . He pulled down wall after wall to get to the treasure but found nothing . Fearing the consequences of his sacrilege he hurriedly built the new mosque . Unfortunately for him the Sultan was informed and immetiately had the Governor beheaded . |
