Asymetrix: A decade of vision and research

Asymetrix Corporation, the Leader in Windows Multimedia, was founded in 1985 by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsft Corporation. His goal: to build software that lets people work the way they want to.

When he founded Asymetrix in 1985, Paul Allen made specific decisions about the way its products would be developed, the environment they would be developed for and in, and the technologies they would pursue—decisions that were both congruent with his feeling for the way the industry would grow and in tune with his vision of computers in everyone’s hands. Asymetrix pioneered in areas that have emerged as important technologies—object-oriented programming, extensibility, graphical interface design, data modeling, and multimedia computing—and, understanding very early on the potential of the Microsoft Windows platform, has always developed its products to support and take advantage of Windows technology.

In 1990, at the time of Microsoft’s enormously successful launch of Windows 3.0, Asymetrix announced the first ToolBook product, a powerful, general-purpose development environment for building solutions and applications. A year later, Asymetrix announced Multimedia ToolBook, which has become a leading multimedia authoring tool for Windows applications; the CBT edition followed, and is now one of the most popular Windows systems for developing courseware.

The world is now entering a new phase of the information age. Since the introduction of easy-to-use browsers, the Internet has grown at a phenomenal rate: millions of new users every month, thousands of new Websites every day. This growth represents a market opportunity on a scale that the computer industry has never seen before. Asymetrix has a commanding lead in the creation of Internet software solutions for exactly this kind of application development. As a result of Mr. Allen’s long-term vision and his ability to invest in developing technologies, Asymetrix now has robust technologies and products in areas that its competition is just discovering. The company has focused on creating software that is very easy to use, and the World Wide Web explosion of the past 18 months has underscored the fact that genuine ease-of-use will be generously rewarded in the marketplace.
