The Government of the Republic of Cyprus in order to regulate and promote sports in Cyprus, has created and established by Law No. 41 of 1969, a public body under the name of "The Cyprus Sport Organisation".

This organisation is an independent, non profit making institution governed by a Board of nine Members appointed by the Council of Ministers: and its principal objective is the promotion of sports, physical training and athletism, as well as the cultivation of the Olympic spirit and sportsmanship amongst the people of Cyprus. It is the highest authority, and by law possesses extensive powers over sport activities in Cyprus. It has its own offices and staff and is financed from public funds.

The Organisation is empowered by law to:

1. exercise control over sport activities and sport grounds and take all steps required for the promotion of sports.
2. advice all athletic and gymnastic clubs on their athletic programs and regulate their activities.
3. give financial and technical assistance to communities, sport clubs, gymnastic clubs, athletic teams and representatives abroad.
4. establish and set into operation athletic centres for use by the public.
5. build stadiums and create athletic playgrounds for use by communities, athletic and gymnastic clubs etc.
6. encourage, promote, organize and finance the participation of Cyprus in international athletic meetings.
7. organize local and international seminars and meetings.
8. publish and circularize bulletins and other publications for the promotion of sports in general.
9. act as arbitrator and regulate disputes between the various athletic, gymnastic, football and other sport clubs.
10. impose punishments on athletic, gymnastic, football and other sport clubs.
11. award prizes and trophies to persons rendering high sport services.
12. attest to and recognize federations, gymnastic, football and other athletic clubs.
