PRODUCTION

Plantations of kiwifruit have begun on a commercial basis in suitable areas of the island and are responding well to local conditions. At present the limited production available is consumed locally. The main varieties grown are Hayward, Bruno and Abbot and these are available in October and November.

[INLINE] SWISSCHARDS PRODUCTION

Closely linked to spinach, it has broad, white stalks with dark ribbed leaves. The leaves and the stalks can be served boiled on their own, or with pulses (eg black-eye beans, dry beans, dry broad beans, etc.). The mild flavour is very palatable to children. Swisschard is a useful source of vitamin A.

[INLINE]COLOCASS PRODUCTION

Recognised by its distinctive brown, course, outer skin and conical shape, colocass is similar in taste to a sweet potato. When peeled, a hard, creamy-white texture is revealed which becomes soft when fried and simmered in red wine or casseroled with tomatoes

[INLINE]FRESH BLACK-EYE BEANS

Their latin name is Vignan Unguiculata. In Cyprus only the runner type is cultivated. It is a produce of local variety and is grown during the period May - Mid-November. It produces whitish-to-yellow flowers with long, tender, stringless pods. These stringless pods are eaten mostly boiled, and are of high nutritional value. Their dry seeds are also eaten boiled with green swisschards. The packaging of this fresh produce is done in carton boxes of 10, 12 or 14 lb. (4.5, 5.5 or 6.4 kilos).
