On European markets this salad crop suffers from confusion due to the different use of its name. Cyprus refers to the crop in the same way as the British namely the crinkly lettuce, the French call it chicory. High in vitamin content, this item is a new addition to the salad range demanded by the public, and Cyprus growers are concentrating on the curly leafed variety.

PRODUCTION

The greater interest in ethnic food and the substantial Asian population in the United Kingdom have meant that Cyprus producers have been able to introduce a whole new range of crops to the export market.

Many were originally grown as a result of experimentation with importers who came to the island to find opportunities, Growers responded, often with crops which meant that they too had to learn a new expertise. Many are now regularly shipped to markets in London and the Midlands, usually to order.

PRODUCTION

This strangely shaped vegetable, which looks like a cross between a turnip and a cabbage, is one of the newest vegetables in existence, having only made its debut some 500 years ago in Germany, where it is a popular crop.
Cyprus, in the main, grows the white variety under cover, although there is also a field version, which is violet. While the leaves can be eaten as a salad, the nutty turnip part of the plant can be cooked and eaten raw. It is exported occasionally for specialist retailers.
