Cyprus House expresses solidarity with Palestinians

A plenary session of the Cyprus House of Representatives on April 4, 2002,  unanimously approved a resolution condemning the actions of Israel and "the genocide carried out by the Sharon government against the Palestinian people". 

It also calls on the Israeli government to withdraw its troops immediately from the Palestinian territory and terminate "the provocative siege of the President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat". 

After the unanimous approval of the resolution, the House also approved a proposal by the honorary President of the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS) Dr. Vassos Lyssarides to send a delegation to Israel to visit Yasser Arafat at his headquarters in Ramallah. 

In his introductory address, House President Demetris Christofias said the parliament could not remain indifferent to what is taking place against the Palestinian people, the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian leader. 

The resolution condemns the Israeli actions against shrines, expresses support for the suffering Palestinian people and solidarity with President Arafat, the "indisputable leader of his people who is in danger of physical and political extermination". 

It calls for the implementation of Security Council resolution 1402 (2002) as well as all previous relevant UN resolutions on the Middle East and supports the founding of a Palestinian state as "the only solution that can bring peace, security and stability in the wider region". 

The House also supports the immediate resumption of the peace process with the clear support of the international community.
