Statement on Cyprus
Re-affirming the positions it has adopted so far on the situation in Cyprus,
Demands the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the occupying Turkish forces from Cyprus;
Demands the full respect of the sovereignty, the independence and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus according to the pertinent resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations;
Condemns the continuing illegal threats of use of force and provocations by the Turkish side which may lead to an escalation of the tension in the area;
Expresses its full support for the ongoing negotiations for the accession of Cyprus to the European Union;
Calls on Turkey to immediately comply with the European Court on Human Rights decision on the Loizidou v Turkey case and to the more recent decision by the E.C.H.R. of Cyprus v Turkey;
Urges the representatives of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot Communities to resume as soon as possible the intercommunal negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations, on the basis of the UN resolutions on Cyprus, the high level agreements and in conformity with the acquis communautaire;
Calls upon the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of
Europe to be more actively involved in the efforts towards the final solution
of the Cyprus problem.
