Cyprus Implements Security Council Resoultion 1373

The Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Takis Klerides, had a meeting with the Ambassador of the United States Donald Bandler, to discuss issues arising in relation to the terrorist attacks of the 11th of September against the USA.

The Minister reiterated the firm commitment of the Government of Cyprus to actively co-operate in the world-wide fight against terrorism. In particular, the Minister informed the American Ambassador  that the relevant authorities in Cyprus have adopted the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1373 to freeze all bank accounts and assets which may be connected to terrorist organizations.

The Central Bank of Cyprus has issued appropriate instructions to all commercial banks. The Minister of Finance and the US Ambassador also exchanged views on various related issues, including ways to further improve customs controls in Cyprus.

Minister Clerides and Ambassador Bandler agreed to maintain close contact, with a view to co-ordinating the actions of their governments in the on-going fight against terrorism
