Cyprus President in Boston to sign deal with Harvard

Nicosia, June 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos is in Boston where he will sign a cooperation agreement with Harvard University to set up an international research centre on the island on public health and environmental issues.

Today he will give a public address on ''Cyprus at a crossroads:the way forward'', to be introduced by professor David Alfwood, Dean-elect of the Kennedy School.

On Wednesday, he will travel to New York where the following day he has a meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the first encounter between the two since the end of the UN-led talks in Switzerland and the rejection by the Greek Cypriots (76 per cent against) of the UN proposed solution.

Papadopoulos is accompanied by the Director of his Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis. Present in Boston is also the Republic's Ambassador to the US Euripides Evriviades.

On Wednesday, President Papadopoulos will speak to members of the Greek American community and attend a formal dinner in honour of Archbishop of the Americas Demetrios.

He is expected to return around 10 June.
