Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism chaired a meeting on high tech issues

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr. Nicos A. Rolandis today has chaired a meeting for examining the work accomplished so far towards the promotion of high tech in Cyprus.  This work was achieved with the involvement of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, the Planning Bureau, the Cyprus Institute of Technology,  the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEBE) and the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB).

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr. Rolandis said that during the meeting it was determined that a lot of progress was achieved towards the promotion of high tech in Cyprus, pointing out the signing of a cooperation contract with the Cypriot company PROPLAN Ltd and the Greek company i-cube Á.Å for the establishment and operation of the first High Tech and Innovation Business Incubator in Cyprus.

Mr. Rolandis also said, that until 17 May,  2002 an expression of interest is expected from other companies or organizations for the establishment of four new business incubators, emphasizing that about 10 companies/ organisations have already expressed such interest.  Amongst them there are Universities, Colleges and entrepreneurs.

The cooperations that were so far achieved are with the New York State University at Albany and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  . Additionally, cooperation will be pursued with other academic institutions in USA such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute, South California University and Massachusetts institute of Technology.

Regarding the Russian Federation, Mr. Rolandis stated that there is cooperation with the Ministry of Industry, Science an Technology, the Government of Moscow, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of Tomsk, the authorities of city Toula and with other organizations.

The aim of the Government of Cyprus, as stated by Mr. Rolandis, is the flow of scientists to the incubators, the use by the the companies under incubation of the laboratories and equipment of American and Russian institutions and the use of know-how in these countries for the evaluation of applications for admission to the Cyprus incubators.

Mr Rolandis also mentioned that the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, in cooperation with the University of Cyprus, is pursuing the establishment of a Centre for Technology Research and Development and he underlined that within the next few days a relevant report is expected to be submitted by the University of Cyprus.  After its examination, the Minister said that a proposal will be submitted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism to the Ministerial Cabinet for an approval as to the further pursuance of this very crucial for Cyprus issue  of research and development.
