MEASURES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH TECH IN CYPRUS
Meeting under the chairmanship of the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism

A special meeting was convened today, 4 March 2002, by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MCIT) Mr. Nicos Rolandis in order to examine issues relating to the promotion of high tech in Cyprus.  The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary of MCIT Mr. Sotiris Soteriou, representatives of the University of Cyprus and other Government officials from the planning Bureau and MCIT.

The main issue examined during the meeting was  the establishment of the four new business incubators and the necessary time required.  It was estimated that by the end of June 2002 all necessary procedures for their establishment will be finalized.  In the meantime,  it is expected that before the end of March 2002, the signing of the amended contract between the Government and Proplan Ltd  for the operation of the first business incubator.

During the meeting there was also an exchange of views about the establishment of a Centre for Technology Research and Development the objective of which will be basically the carrying out of applied research and development in specific high-tech fields and the supply of services to the industry.  A relevant proposal is expected to be submitted by Dr. Andreas Alexandrou of the University of Cyprus by the first semester of 2002.
