Renewal of efforts

The new round of consultations of the Secretary-General's representatives in Nicosia, Athens and Ankara which took place in February 1992, failed to move matters forward. In fact, the new round was characterized by a hardening of Turkish positions and by a reluctance of Turkish Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to meet with the Secretary-General's representatives. The international community expressed deep concern over the impasse in the U.N. initiative on Cyprus and reiterated that the continuing division of Cyprus is tragic and wrong.
