Consumer Price Index for the
Month of September, 1998 |
The Department of Statistics and Research
announces that the Consumer Price Index for September, 1998 increased by 1,95 units or
1,58 per cent to 125,36 units compared to 123,41 in the previous month. This is mainly due
to increases in the prices of clothing and footwear following the end of the summer season
sales as well as to increases in the prices of certain fresh vegetables, bus fares in
urban areas and tuition fees of private educational instituions and part'time educational
coaching centres.
2. The average rate of increase of the Index for the period
January-September 1998 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 2,51%
while the Index of September 1998 compared to the Index of September 1997 showed an
increase of 3,72%.
3. The average rate of increase of the Index for the last twelve months (i.e. October
1997 - September 1998) compared to the preceding twelve months (i.e. October 1996 -
September 1997) was 2,88%. |
