Pre-primary Education:

Pre-primary schools increased in 1996/97 to 659 compared to 647 of the previous year. The number of children decreased by 1,0% and dropped to 25.996 from 26.254 and the teaching staff increased from 1.323 to 1.426. The enrolment ratio of the 2-5 age group rose slightly to 60,0% in relation to 59,9% in 1995/96.

Of the total primary school population 68,1% was attending schools in urban areas and the remaining 31,9% in rural areas. Primary school leavers in 1995/96 decreased by 1,5% to 10.828 from 10.989 in 1994/95.This is due to demographic developments.

Secondary Education:

In 1996/97 there were 125 secondary schools with 61.266 pupils and 5.757 teachers compared to 123 schools, 59.845 pupils and 4.832 teachers in 1995/96. The pupil/teacher ratio was 10,6 in relation to 12,4 in the previous school-year and 14,5 ten years ago. Enrolments in public schools accounted for 90,0% and in private schools for 10,0%, in relation to 89,5% and 10,5% respectively, in 1995/96.

In 1981/82 only 25% of the total students were enrolled in local institutions, while in 1996/97 this rose to 57%.

Third Level Education:

In 1996/97, there were 35 public and private institutions with a total enrolment of 9.982 students, compared to 8.874 in 1995/96. Of the third level students, 49,9% were enrolled in public and the remaining 50,1% in private institutions. Males accounted for 44,3% of the total enrolments and females for 55,7%.
