The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during 2001
as compared with 2000 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption
and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £2.528,7 mn as
compared with £2.401,9 mn in 2000. Total exports valued at £628,0 mn
compared to £591,9 mn in 2000. The trade deficit accounted for £1.900,7
mn compared to £1.810,1 mn in 2000.
(b) Imports for home consumption in 2001 were £2.176,8 mn
compared to £1.968,7mn in 2000. Intermediate inputs imported for home
consumption valued at £710,3 mn or 32,6%, followed by consumer goods with
£617,7 mn or 28,4%, fuels and lubricants with £266,1 mn or 12,2%,
capital goods with £258,3 mn or 11,9% and transport equipment with
£226,6 mn or 10,4%.
(c) Domestic exports including shipstores, were £247,0 mn
as compared with £240,8 mn in 2000 and re-exports, including shipstores,
£381,0 mn compared to £351,1 mn in 2000. Industrial products of domestic
produce exported in 2001 accounted for £188,2 mn or 80,4%. Exports of raw
agricultural products in 2001 valued at £43,8 mn.
(d) During 2001 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with
goods valued at £1.284,6 mn or 50,8% and absorbed goods valued at £122,3
mn or 52,3% of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores.
