The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period
January-November 2001 as compared with January-November 2000, were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) rose to £2.340,6 mn as compared with £2.189,4
mn in January-November 2000. Total exports reached £586,2 mn compared to
£552,8 mn in January-November 2000. The trade deficit accounted for £1.754,4
mn compared to £1.636,6 mn.
(b) Imports for home consumption increased to £2.012,6 mn during
January-November, 2001 compared to £1.790,7 mn in January-November 2000.
Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £654,3 mn or
32,5% followed by consumer goods with £572,8 mn or 28,5%, fuels and
lubricants with £249,8 mn or 12,4%, capital goods with £238,2 mn or 11,8%
and transport equipment with £210,8 mn or 10,5%.
(c) Domestic exports including shipstores, went up to £228,6 mn as
compared with £222,0 mn in January-November 2000, and re-exports, including
shipstores, to £357,6 mn compared to £330,8 mn in January-November 2000.
Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-November
2001 accounted for £172,6 mn or 79,8%. Exports of raw agricultural products
in January-November 2001 valued at £41,7 mn.
(d) During January-November 2001 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with
goods valued at £1.183,4 mn or 50,6% and absorbed goods valued at £113,8 mn
or 52,7% of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores.
