        | Foreign Trade Statistics for the
        Period January-March 1998 | 
       
     
     The Department of
    Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary
    form for the period January-March 1998.
    The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during January-March 1998 as
    compared with January-March 1997 were: 
    (a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
    placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £465,8 mn as compared with £423,1 mn in
    January-March 1997. 
    (b) Total exports were £157,5 mn in relation to £146,5 mn in
    January-March 1997. 
    (c) As a result of the above developments the trade deficit accounted for
    £308,3 mn compared to £276,6 mn in January-March, 1997. 
    (d) Imports for home consumption were £381,5 mn in January-March 1998 and
    £341,4 mn in January-March 1997. 
    (e) The EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £238,1 mn or
    51,1% of the total imports as compared with £204,1 mn or 48,2% during January-March 1997. 
    (f) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-March
    1998 were £153,2 mn or 40,2% as against £142,5 mn or 41,8% in January-March 1997,
    followed by consumer goods with £99,8 mn or 26,2% as against £73,9 mn or 21,7%;
    transport equipment amounted to £47,4 mn or 12,4% compared to £34,6 mn or 10,1% and
    capital goods accounted for £43,0 mn or 11,3% as compared with £35,9 mn or 10,5% in
    January-March 1997. 
    (g) Domestic exports including shipstores, were £60,1 mn in January-March
    1998 and £57,6 mn in January-March 1997 whilst re-exports including shipstores, amounted
    to £97,4 mn compared to £88,9 mn in January-March 1997. 
    (h) The EU countries absorbed 56,8% or £33,4 mn of Cyprus domestic
    exports (excluding shipstores) followed by the Arab countries with a share of 25,2% or
    £14,8 mn. The corresponding shares for the E.U. and the Arab countries regarding the
    first quarter of 1997 were 55,6% and 22,2% respectively. 
    (i) Industrial products of domestic produce exported during the first
    quarter of 1998 (excluding shipstores) accounted for 71,5% or £42,0 mn as compared with
    69,5% or £39,2 mn, during the corresponding period of 1997, with clothing and footwear
    accounting for £6,9mn and £2,6mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during
    January-March 1997 totalled £6,9mn and of footwear £1,7mn. Exports of raw agricultural
    products valued at £16,6 mn in January-March 1998 and £17,1 mn in January-March 1997,
    with potatoes accounting for £6,8 mn compared to £5,3mn and citrus fruit for £7,6 mn
    and £9,5 mn in January-March 1998 and 1997 respectively.
