Foreign Trade Statistics for the
Period January-April 1998 |
The Department of
Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary
form for the period January-April 1998.
The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during January-April 1998 as
compared with January-April 1997 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) totaled £630,2 mn as compared with £584,8 mn in
January-April 1997.
(b) Total exports were £205,5 mn in relation to £194,4 mn in
January-April 1997.
(c) As a result of the above developments the trade deficit accounted for
£424,7 mn compared to £390,4 mn in January-April 1997.
(d) Imports for home consumption were £513,0 mn in January-April 1998 and
£467,6 mn in January-April 1997.
(e) The EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £326,6 mn or
51,8% of the total imports as compared with £281,9 mn or 48,2% during January-April 1997.
(f) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-April
1998 were £203,3 mn or 39,6% as against £185,2 mn or 39,6% in January-April 1997,
followed by consumer goods with £142,7 mn or 27,8% as against £109,7 mn or 23,5%;
transport equipment amounted to £62,0 mn or 12,1% compared to £45,9 mn or 9,8% and
capital goods accounted for £57,5 mn or 11,2% compared with £49,3 mn or 10,6% in
January-April 1997.
(g) Domestic exports, including shipstores, were £82,4 mn in
January-April 1998 and £75,3 mn in January-April 1997 whilst re-exports including
shipstores, amounted to £123,1 mn compared to £119,1 mn in January-April 1997.
(h) The EU countries absorbed 57,4% or £46,3 mn of Cyprus domestic
exports (excluding shipstores) followed by the Arab countries with a share of 24,1% or
£19,5 mn. The corresponding shares for the EU and and Arab countries for January-April,
1997 were 57,0% and 22,3% respectively.
(i) Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-April
1998 (excluding shipstores) accounted for 69,3% or £55,9 mn as compared with 70,1% or
£51,6 mn, during the same period of 1997, with clothing and footwear accounting for £8,7
mn and £3,3 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-April 1997 totaled
£8,5 mn and of footwear £2,2 mn. Exports of raw agricultural products valued at £24,6
mn in January-April 1998 and £21,7 mn in January-April 1997, with potatoes accounting for
£12,4 mn compared to £6,7 mn and citrus fruit for £9,6 mn and £12,2 mn in
January-April 1998 and 1997 respectively.
