The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period
January-October 2001 as compared with January-October 2000 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £2.143,6 mn as compared with
£1.951,8 mn in January-October 2000. Total exports reached £538,1 mn
compared to £506,3 mn in January-October 2000. The trade deficit accounted
for £1.605,5 mn compared to £1.810,1 mn.
(b) Imports for home consumption increased to £1.840,0 mn during
January-October 2001 compared to £1.600,8 mn in January-October 2000.
Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £590,2 mn or
32,1%, followed by consumer goods with £518,6 mn or 28,2%, fuels and
lubricants with £237,2 mn or 12,9%, capital goods with £217,8 mn or 11,8%
and transport equipment with £192,2 mn or 10,4%.
(c) Domestic exports including shipstores valued at £209,1 mn as compared
with £203,7 mn in January-October 2000, whilst re-exports, including
shipstores were £329,0 mn compared to £302,6 mn in January-October 2000.
Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-October 2001
accounted for £156,0 mn or 79,0%. Exports of raw agricultural products in
January-October 2001 valued at £40,0 mn.
(d) During January-October 2001 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with
goods valued at £1.075,6 mn or 50,2% and absorbed goods valued at £105,1 mn
or 53,2% of Cyprus domestic exports.
