The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period
January-October 2002 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports
placed into bonded warehouses) were £2.040,0 mn as compared with £2.143,6
mn in January-October 2001. Total exports amounted to £436,1 mn compared
to £538,3 mn during January-October 2001. The trade deficit accounted for
£1.603,9 mn compared to £1.605,3 mn in the corresponding period of 2001.
(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £1.844,3 mn compared to
£1.840,0 mn in January-October 2001. Intermediate inputs imported for home
consumption in January-October 2002 valued at £589,3 mn or 32,0%, followed
by consumer goods with £536,1 mn or 29,1%, transport equipment with £238,1
mn or 12,9%, capital goods with £198,8 mn or 10,8% and fuels and
lubricants with £180,9 mn or 9,8%.
(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £197,8
mn as compared with £209,3 mn in January-October 2001 and re-exports,
including stores and provisions to £238,3 mn compared to £329,0 mn in the
corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce
exported in January-October 2002 accounted for £153,9 mn or 81,2% while
exports of raw agricultural products valued at £33,0 mn or 17,4%.
(d) During the period January-October 2002 the EU countries supplied
Cyprus with goods valued at £1.086,6 mn or 53,3% and absorbed goods valued
at £101,3 mn or 53,5% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and
provisions.
