Foreign Trade Statistics for the Period January-May 1998

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary form for the period January-May 1998.

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during January-May 1998 as compared with January-May 1997 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totaled £783,2 mn as compared with £765,7 mn in January-May 1997.

(b) Total exports were £270,1 mn in relation to £256,1 mn in January-May 1997.

(c) As a result of the above developments the trade deficit totalled for £513,1 mn compared to £509,6 mn in January-May 1997.

(d) Imports for home consumption were £636,7 mn in January-May 1998 and £606,9 mn in January-May 1997.

(e) The EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £409,1 mn or 52,2% of the total imports as compared with £367,9 mn or 48,1% during January-May 1997.

(f) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-May 1998 were £254,9 mn or 40,0% as against £242,2 mn or 39,9% in January-May 1997, followed by consumer goods with £180,7 mn or 28,4% as against £144,0 mn or 23,7%; transport equipment amounted to £75,6 mn or 11,9% compared to £59,7 mn or 9,8% and capital goods accounted for £71,9 mn or 11,3% as compared with £63,9 mn or 10,5% in January-May 1997.

(g) Domestic exports, including shipstores, were £110,4 mn in January-May 1998 and £94,6 mn in January-May 1997 whilst re-exports including shipstores, amounted to £159,8 mn compared to £161,5 mn in January-May 1997.

(h) The EU countries absorbed 59,3% or £64,2 mn of Cyprus domestic exports (excluding shipstores) followed by the Arab countries with a share of 22,5% or £24,4 mn. The corresponding shares for the EU and and Arab countries for January-May, 1997 were 53,0% and 25,4% respectively.

(i) Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-May 1998 (excluding shipstores) accounted for 66,0% or £71,4 mn as compared with 71,4% or £65,9 mn, during the same period of 1997, with clothing and footwear accounting for £11,0 mn and £4,2 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-May 1997 totalled £10,1 mn and of footwear £2,7 mn. Exports of raw agricultural products valued at £36,5 mn in January-May 1998 and £26,1 mn in January-May 1997, with potatoes accounting for £22,8 mn compared to £7,6 mn and citrus fruit for £10,6 mn and £14,0 mn in January-May 1998 and 1997 respectively.
