- The Statistical Service announces that in August 2000 the number of
arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including
excursionists) reached 484.590 recording an increase of 5,9% compared
to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-August
2000 arrivals of travellers reached 2.398.730 compared to 2.125.241 in
the corresponding period of 1999, recording an increase of 12,9%.
- Arrivals of tourists reached 356.686 in August 2000 compared to
341.088 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of
4,6%. For the period January-August 2000 arrivals of tourists reached
1.828.421 compared to 1.651.680 in the corresponding period of 1999,
i.e. an increase of 10,7%.
The main countries of tourist arrivals in August 2000 were the United
Kingdom with 53,1%, Russia with 6,4%, Germany with 6,3%, Sweden with
4,7%, Greece with 3,4%, Norway with 2,3% and Israel with 2,2%. The
overwhelming majority, 78,9% of tourist arrivals was from countries of
the European Union.
- In August 2000, 98.395 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip
abroad compared to 91.283 in the corresponding month last year. For
the period January-August 2000, 416.908 residents returned from a trip
abroad compared to 373.056 in the corresponding period last year
recording an increase of 11,8%.
- In August 2000 the number of same-day visitors reached 26.892 of
which 1.874 were same-day tourists and 25.018 excursionists. Long-term
immigrants numbered 923 and short-term immigrants 1.692.
