1. The Department of Statistics and Research announces that in June 1999 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 329.620 recording an increase of 8,8% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-June 1999 arrivals of travellers reached 1.265.011 compared to 1.173.621 in the corresponding period of 1998, recording an increase of 7,8%.

2. Arrivals of tourists reached 276.879 in June 1999 compared to 248.426 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 11,5%. For the period January-June 1999 arrivals of tourists reached 988.550 compared to 898.213 in the corresponding period of 1998, i.e. an increase of 10,1%.

The main countries of tourist arrivals are the United Kingdom with 51,8%, Sweden with 6,7%, Germany with 5,9%, Russia with 5,0%, Switzerland with 3,4%, Norway with 2,8% and Greece with 2,7%. The overwhelming majority, 78,5% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.

3. In June 1999, 41.347 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 40.138 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-June 1999, 220.431 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 209.716 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 5,1%.

4. In June 1999 the number of excursionists, cruise-ship visitors and transit at ports/airports reached 8.001, long-term immigrants 619, short-term immigrants 1.432 and 1.340 were same-day tourists.
