The Department of Statistics and Research announces that in August 1999 the
number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached
457.534 recording an increase of 7,7% compared to the corresponding month last year. For
the period January-August 1999 arrivals of travellers reached 2.125.241 compared to
1.973.038 in the corresponding period of 1998, recording also an increase of 7,7%.
- Arrivals of tourists reached 341.088 in August 1999 compared to 326.854 in the
corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 4,4%. For the period
January-August 1999 arrivals of tourists reached 1.651.680 compared to 1.535.051 in the
corresponding period of 1998, i.e. an increase of 7,6%.
The main countries of tourist arrivals are the United Kingdom with 48,2%, Germany with
6,3%, Russia with 5,6%, Sweden with 5,5%, Israel with 3,3%, Greece with 3,0%, Switzerland
with 2,6%, and Norway with 2,5%. The overwhelming majority, 76,3% of tourist arrivals was
from countries of the European Union.
- In August 1999, 91.283 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to
80.651 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-August 1999, 373.056
residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 340.982 in the corresponding period last
year recording an increase of 9,4%.
- In August 1999 the number of same-day visitors reached 22.629 of which 1.832 were
same-day tourists and 20.797 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 999 and
short-term immigrants 1.534.
