The Statistical Service announces that in June 2000 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 379.700 recording an increase of 15,2% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-June 2000 arrivals of travellers reached 1.449.721 compared to 1.265.011 in the corresponding period of 1999, recording an increase of 14,6%.

Arrivals of tourists reached 302.011 in June 2000 compared to 276.879 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 9,1%. For the period January-June 2000 arrivals of tourists reached 1.109.435 compared to 988.550 in the corresponding period of 1999, i.e. an increase of 12,2%.

The main countries of tourist arrivals in June 2000 were the United Kingdom with 51,6%, Germany with 7,3%, Sweden with 6,1%, Russia with 5,1%, Greece with 3,0%, Norway with 3,0% and Switzerland with 2,3%. The overwhelming majority, 79,0% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.

In June 2000, 48.771 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 41.347 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-June 2000, 246.782 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 220.431 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 12,0%.

In June 2000 the number of same-day visitors reached 25.725 of which 1.797 were same-day tourists and 23.928 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 966 and short-term immigrants 2.226.
