- The Department of Statistics and Research announces that in
September 1999 the number of arrivals covering all categories of
travellers (including excursionists) reached 376.241 recording an
increase of 13,3% compared to the corresponding month last year. For
the period January-September 1999 arrivals of travellers reached
2.501.482 compared to 2.305.026 in the corresponding period of 1998,
recording an increase of 8,5%.
- Arrivals of tourists reached 309.498 in September 1999 compared to
270.283 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of
14,5%. For the period January-September 1999 arrivals of tourists
reached 1.961.179 compared to 1.805.335 in the corresponding period of
1998, i.e. an increase of 8,6%.
The main countries of tourist arrivals are the United Kingdom with
51,6%, Germany with 8,2%, Sweden with 5,1%, Switzerland with 4,1%,
Russia with 3,8% and Israel with 3,5%. The overwhelming majority,
78,0% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.
- In September 1999, 48.443 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip
abroad compared to 42.563 in the corresponding month last year. For
the period January-September 1999, 421.499 residents returned from a
trip abroad compared to 383.546 in the corresponding period last year
recording an increase of 9,9%.
- In September 1999 the number of same-day visitors reached 15.535 of
which 1.551 were same-day tourists and 13.984 excursionists. Long-term
immigrants numbered 1.180 and short-term immigrants 1.583.
