2. The main developments in the first three months of 1998 compared to
the same period of 1997, were:
(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles during the first quarter
of 1998 increased by 21,1% to 9.159 from 7.564 vehicles in the same period of 1997. Of the
total motor vehicles registered 4.127 were new vehicles and 5.032 were used vehicles. All
categories of vehicles exhibited increases in the registrations in the first three months
of 1998.
(b) Private saloon cars increased to 5.695 from 4.801 in
January-March, 1997 i.e. there was an increase of 18,6%. This was the result of a 29.0%
decline in the registrations of new saloon cars while used cars increased by 51,2% during
the first quarter of 1998 compared to last year? s first three months.
(c) Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 20,5% to 2.001
from last year?s 1.660 vehicles; Light goods vehicles increased by 22,6% to
1.892 and Heavy goods vehicles decreased by 6,8% to 109 in
January-March 1998.
(d) Mechanised cycles increased by 38,9% and totalled 779
compared to 561 in January-March 1997.
