Transport Statistics, 1997

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it has published the annual report "Transport Statistics" for the year 1997.

The report provides detailed information on the economic developments of the broad Transport, Storage and Communication Sector as well as data on the registration of motor vehicles by type and category, road accidents, and shipping and aviation activities.

The main developments during 1997 were as follows:

(a) The broad Transport, Storage and Communication sector showed further expansion in 1997. This was the result of increased activity in certain subsectors, particularly the communications, the air and water transport and the services allied to transport.

The value added of the sector in real terms increased by 4,2% in 1997 compared to a 3,7% increase in 1996.

(b) Motor vehicles newly registered during 1997 decreased by 8,4% to 31,857 from 34,768 in 1996. Private saloon cars newly registered decreased slightly by 0,1% to 19,164 from 19,189 in 1996.

The total number of vehicles on the register of the Department of Road Transport at the end of 1997 totalled 472,132 of which 261,993 were private saloon cars.

(c) The number of road accidents reported to the police decreased to 5,877 in 1997 compared to 6,640 in 1996. Human casualties in road accidents were 115 persons killed and 4,490 persons injured in 1997 as against 128 dead and 4,516 injured in 1996.

(d) During 1997, 4,593 vessels arrived at the various ports of Cyprus compared to 5,088 in 1996. Of these 3,301 or 71,8% arrived at Limassol port, 1,060 or 23,1% called at Larnaca port and 232 at other ports.

At the end of 1997, 2,798 ships were on the Cyprus Register (with a total of 26,419,861 gross registered tonnage) as against 2,733 ships in 1996 and 1,487 in 1985.

(e) Civil aircraft landings increased during 1997 and totalled 22,840 compared to 21,756 in 1996. Passenger arrivals through airports increased to 2,337,695 in 1997 compared to 2,207,884 in 1996.
